Kitchen Backsplash

Having our kitchen countertops installed was a pretty epic life moment, not only because it was my birthday, but because this was the first kitchen we had ever designed, and it finally felt like ours. The only thing left to do was the backsplash. We initially had picked out a pale arctic blue glass subway tile for our backsplash, but we learned that you definitely don't pick your backsplash before your countertops.

Once they had been installed though we started shopping around. While on a shopping trip at the Home Depot (we affectionately call it the Homie Deeps - don't know why, just do) we came across exactly what we were looking for. It was glass subway tile in a color called 'Cotton Fields' it was white with a slightly opaque look we thought would allow it to reflex the gray in our countertops and on our walls nicely. Besides being pretty it was $6 a sheet (freaking awesome!), which would let us know do the whole kitchen for less than $250. We bought everything we needed and got to work. We're pretty happy with how it turned out!

We started by using a level and measuring out the two layers of tile sheets we'd need, as well as where the bottom and the top of our tiling area should be.

Then we decided where we would stop tiling.

We did the bottom row first all the way around and allowed it to set a bit so we wouldn't bump or ruin what we'd already put up.

Then it was time to start the second row! We laid the mortar with the tile trellis and started going across the second row using spacers to keep it even.

It took some serious finesse around the plug and switches, and many a cracked tile but we finally finished! Then we let it set over night before we started the grout.

Grouting time!

After grouting it was time to wipe off the grout with large sponges, rinsing them in clean water.

And done!
