Spring has FINALLY sprung and a new house means a new garden! We've nicknamed this house the enchanted forest, we have about 30 wild turkeys, 4 bunnies, countless squirrels, 1 ground hog, two possums, six deer, one raccoon, one identified coyote, and a very large bear, that enjoy our property as well as us. All of this wild life meant that for our garden to have any hope of survival, placement and protection would be crucial. We decided the back side of the detached garage would be perfect, it gets great sun.
We started with some palettes Joe had gotten from work.
And then began the super fun process of removing alternating boards (trying not to break them) and relocating them to make shelves.
Once the front of each row had be correctly put in place, we used the left over boards we had removed as the bottom. We did that buy cutting each one to the extra length of each shelf. The tapping them in place, gently with a hammer.
Then we used a nail gun to secure the bottoms in place. We shot through the side with the nail gun every few inches.
We wanted to keep it rustic so we only did a little light bit of sanding with the palm sander (may he rest in peace - we're currently searching for new sander recommendations)! **Update we got an awesome new palm sander!
Once the sanding was done and the palettes swept off it was time to stain. An old rag or sock is our go to for stain application.
The using a marker, we wrote out the herb names, and then went over it with black paint. Once that had dried we sprayed both palettes with water proofing spray.
After everything had dried, it was time to install! We didn't want to put holes in our vinyl siding, so Joe came up with the brilliant idea to attach two by fours to each side to act as stakes that we go into the ground. This also means that there is a space between the garage and the palettes so we have some good air flow for the plants.
Getting the stakes in the ground wasn't easy, but it was definitely worth the effort, we love the end results.
